01 / Prepare

What to bring

  • Product type, intended use, and target sales markets
  • Technical documentation and existing test reports
  • Planned launch date and customer-specified requirements

02 / Qualify

What to ask

  • Which requirements apply to our stated product and markets, and why?
  • Does your scope include preparation, testing, certification, or only part of that work?
  • What happens if the product changes or a test fails?

03 / Compare

Keep the scope consistent.

Compare the same product scope and target markets. Confirm the exact reports or certificates delivered, exclusions, and any ongoing obligations with the specialist.

Commission a written scope assessment

Describe the product's intended use, users, power and radio features, installation, and target markets. Ask the specialist to identify applicable requirements, the proposed assessment route, and its assumptions. Product certification work is specific to the product and scheme; avoid treating a familiar mark as a complete market-access plan.

  • Provide product variants, accessories, power supplies, and planned configurations.
  • List customer or channel requirements separately from the specialist's applicability assessment.
  • Ask who handles testing, technical documentation, application review, labels, and ongoing obligations.

Separate the laboratory from the certification decision

OSHA's NRTL program recognizes organizations within a scope of standards and describes their product certification marks. NIST separately describes laboratory accreditation. Those sources explain distinct roles; ask which role each organization performs in your project and which deliverable you receive.

  • Verify the proposed organization and scope through the relevant official program where applicable.
  • Record the product configurations covered and the evidence needed for review.
  • Ask how changes to components, firmware, enclosure, or manufacturing location are assessed after approval.

QuestionEvidence to requestNeeds clarification
Why is this assessment route proposed?A written explanation tied to product use, configuration, and market.A generic checklist with no applicability reasoning.
What will be delivered?Named reports, decisions, permitted marks, and documentation responsibilities.Testing, accreditation, and certification are used interchangeably.
What continues after approval? The scheme-specific change, renewal, and follow-up responsibilities. The proposal omits all post-approval responsibilities.

Project example

Illustrative project: an industrial controller has two power-supply variants and an optional wireless module. Ask the specialist whether each configuration is covered by the proposed work and which other assessments remain. Compare proposals against that written scope, then record responsibility for documentation and changes. This example does not decide which requirements apply to a real product.

Common buying questions

Can one certificate cover every sales market?

Have the specialist confirm the market and configuration coverage in writing. Identify any remaining approvals or obligations before treating the product as ready for that market.

Is a supplier's quality-system certificate my product approval?

Ask what the certificate covers. Evidence about a supplier's management system is different from an assessment of your product against a particular requirement.

Should I wait until the design is finished?

Discuss the route and design constraints early. Ask when formal samples and released documentation are needed and how later changes affect the work.
