Choosing a PCB assembly partner

Match your electronics build to a partner's sourcing, assembly, inspection, and test scope. Board fabrication and assembly may be separate services.

Build a pcb assembly brief →

01 / Prepare

What to bring

  • Board files, bill of materials, and assembly documentation availability
  • Build quantity, component sourcing plan, and acceptable substitutions
  • Programming, functional test, and enclosure requirements

02 / Qualify

What to ask

  • Who purchases components and approves substitutions or shortages?
  • Which inspection, programming, and test steps are included?
  • How are failed units, rework, and engineering changes handled?

03 / Compare

Keep the scope consistent.

Compare component sourcing, fabrication, assembly, programming, and test as separate line items. Confirm what counts as an accepted finished unit.

Release fabrication and assembly information together

Give the assembler a coherent revision package, not files accumulated from several builds. Sierra Circuits describes fabrication data, the bill of materials, and placement data as distinct inputs. Ask your assembler which formats it accepts and how it resolves missing or inconsistent information.

  • Include fabrication files and stackup, BOM with manufacturer part numbers, and placement and assembly information.
  • Identify do-not-populate parts, component orientation, approved alternatives, and supplied components.
  • Provide the programming image and version, test procedure, fixtures, and expected outputs where they are part of the build.

Distinguish inspection from functional acceptance

MacroFab lists several assembly and inspection capabilities. Ask which are actually proposed for your board. Visual or X-ray inspection answers different questions from programming and a functional test; define the delivered unit before comparing quotes.

  • Record who sources each component and who approves a shortage workaround.
  • Name the test steps, result records, failed-unit handling, and any coating or final assembly.
  • Ask whether the quote covers accepted units, assembled units, or another quantity basis.

Questions, useful evidence, and answers that need follow-up
QuestionEvidence to requestNeeds clarification
Who owns component sourcing?A BOM review with supplier responsibilities and an alternative-approval process.Unspecified substitutes can be used without engineering review.
What does the inspection cover?Named methods and coverage for the quoted board and component packages.A general capability list is presented as the actual order's test plan.
What is an accepted unit?Agreed programming, functional results, and failure disposition.Assembly completion is treated as proof the device works.

Project example

Illustrative project: a 40-board controller pilot needs programming and a fixture-based sensor check. Candidate A quotes assembly only; candidate B includes programming but leaves fixture development to the buyer. Request the missing scopes rather than comparing their unit prices directly. Resolve a missing regulator through an approved BOM change and record which boards use the revised component.

Common buying questions

Are bare-board testing and assembled-board testing the same?

Ask what each step checks and who performs it. A test on the fabricated board does not replace the agreed checks on populated and programmed assemblies.

Should I consign components?

Compare sourcing responsibilities, incoming inspection, handling losses, excess inventory, and shortage response. Choose based on the build's constraints rather than assuming consignment is cheaper.

Can the assembler select an equivalent part?

Set an engineering approval process. A matching package or headline rating does not by itself establish that a substitute is suitable for the circuit.

Sources and further planning

Sources provide technical or program context. Checklists and project examples are original editorial guidance. Supplier documents describe that supplier's service; confirm your quoted scope directly.
