Hardware buying guide

Choosing a hardware testing partner

Start with the question the test must answer. Share the intended use, known failure modes, and the evidence needed for the next product decision.

01 / Prepare

What to bring

  • Product description, intended environment, and test objectives
  • Sample availability, setup needs, and known failure modes
  • Existing test plans and any customer-specified requirements

02 / Qualify

What to ask

  • Can you help define the test plan and acceptance criteria?
  • What samples, fixtures, operating modes, and setup time are required?
  • What raw data and report are included, and how is retesting priced?

03 / Compare

Keep the scope consistent.

Compare test conditions, sample counts, preparation, reporting, and retest scope. Ask whether the planned work is exploratory testing or evidence for a specific requirement.

Start with the decision the test will support

State whether the work investigates a failure, compares designs, checks a customer requirement, or supports a formal assessment. Each purpose changes the samples, method, operating conditions, and reporting you need. Put the decision and its owner in the request before asking for a lab slot.

  • Describe the sample revision, use conditions, operating modes, and known failure modes.
  • Agree the test method, conditions, sample count, and pass/fail or observation criteria.
  • Specify fixtures, monitoring, software, power, and who provides them.

Check the lab and the report scope

NIST explains that laboratory accreditation concerns competence for specific tests or calibrations and is documented by a scope. Where accredited work is needed, check the selected location and method against the current scope rather than accepting an organization-wide claim.

  • Ask whether preparation, engineering support, raw data, photographs, and the report are included.
  • Agree how setup deviations, interrupted runs, failures, and retests are recorded.
  • Confirm whether the sample may be damaged and what happens to it after the work.

Questions, useful evidence, and answers that need follow-up
QuestionEvidence to requestNeeds clarification
Can the proposed site perform the method?Named facility, equipment envelope, and applicable scope where required. An accreditation logo with no location or method confirmation.
Will the setup represent our product? An agreed fixture, operating state, and measurement arrangement.A lab booking is offered before sample and setup needs are understood.
What evidence will the report contain?Defined results, conditions, deviations, and sample identification.Only a pass/fail summary is offered when investigation needs data.

Project example

Illustrative project: a powered sensor must keep logging during an environmental trial. Specify the enclosure revision, mounting arrangement, power, software, and logging check. Ask the lab how it monitors the unit during the run and records interruptions. If a failure occurs, preserve the setup and timeline in the report before changing the design or scheduling a retest.

Common buying questions

Does an accredited lab mean my product is certified?

No. Accreditation concerns a lab's competence within a defined scope. Ask separately what product assessment or certification, if any, the engagement delivers.

How many samples should I send?

Agree the sample plan with the test owner and lab based on the objective or applicable method. Record spares, destructive work, and whether the same sample is used across tests.

What should I do after a failed test?

Review the conditions, sample, and failure evidence before deciding on a design change. Agree which checks must be repeated and how the new report relates to the earlier result.

Details to check with providers

These records have an official capability source. Details may cover one service within a provider's wider offering; confirm the process and material combination for your project.

Applied Technical Services

Processes: Mechanical testing, Nondestructive testing, Chemical analysis, Environmental testing, Metallurgical analysis

Scope and buying questions: Specify the specimen, material, acceptance standard, and whether the test is destructive. Which preparation, sampling, and traceability records are required? Confirm the laboratory and current method scope, and distinguish routine testing from an investigation of a field failure.

DEKRA

Processes: Battery testing, Testing and conformity assessment, Certification services

Scope and buying questions: Identify the battery or product configuration and the exact laboratory. Which electrical, mechanical, or environmental tests are proposed? Request the applicable standard and report scope rather than assuming every service applies at every DEKRA site.

DES

Processes: Vibration testing, Shock testing, Environmental simulation, Thermal shock testing, Package testing, Accelerated life testing

Scope and buying questions: Define the load profile, operating conditions, fixtures, instrumentation, and failure criteria. Which sequence best represents the intended use? Ask what monitoring, raw data, functional checks, and failure analysis are included alongside the final test report.
